While $799 might look high, I think it's not when you compare it to other Windows 7 tablets. Active digitizer alone makes it different to others.

I can put this together:
used netbook with better specs = $250
3M Capacitive touschscreen/controller = $100
Broadcom crystal hd card = $50
Work putting it together = free
so $400 != $800
The touch screen looks lethargic to me. Somethings not right with the flow, its unnatural
Add active pen screen (albeit N-Trig, not Wacom), warranty, etc. For some folks a slate is acceptable but a laptop/netbook simply is impractical. While not perfect for OUR own uses, it is far better than George's pathetic example. This is a BUSINNES device, not intended for MP3 dweebs.
Just my 2¢, a developer of business applications, approx 1.7 M users worldwide. I have use for "dweeby" stuff too, but I don't confuse a personal device with a business device. Just wish it had a 3Qi screen (or equiv) so one could actually USE it easily outdoors, unlike what is shown in the fake videos... ;-)
Leave it to HP to remind people that the cost of netbooks are nearly at cost but put the same hardware in a different market category and then the pricing goes way up to match up to the rest of the computer market.
So we're kinda spoiled with netbook pricing, as that's not the norm for the rest of the market, but this is still a pretty high price when similarly configured slates can go for about $200 less.

Finally!!! Ink'ing on a tablet... You shouldn't be able to call it a tablet if it cant do fluid pen input...

No, those without capacitive screens go for even less. Look up the price of those components and It'll be surprising if the build cost them much more than $500 per unit.

Used netbook upgrade to new netbook +$150 (compare like with like)
A netbook doesn't come with a 64gb ssd either ..
+$100
doesn't come with win 7 prof +$100
doesn't come with active digitizer +$100
doesn't come at 1.5lb +$100
Buy a dock and custom case +$50
Umm your price is now $1000! + a whole lot of free work
To me the big problem is the size of the screen - especially in portrait mode (because it is widescreen) - your letter sized documents are really going to be small if you want to see the whole page. Wish they had gone with the tc1100 4:3 10" sized screen.
But still a great device for artists and note takers.
i read it has no palm rejection? fail! is it posible in win7 to switch of the touch so that it only reacts on active pen input???

A new netbook can be gotten for just $300, not $250+$150, besides Z540 is hardly a new ATOM chip. You also never bothered to subtract the cost of HDD from the price of the SSD, or of the W7 from the Prof version. Active digitizer for manufacturers cost less than $100 to add. So price is quite well below you're estimate.
give me some Ion2 graphics drop the crystal HD and I'm there.
Just heard from my account manager at verkkokauppa, that they don't expect to get the Slate until Q1/Q2 2011.
Shame.

NTrig digitizer/capacitive screens on other devices have palm rejection. Claims this does not is based upon one video only. There are videos out there that clearly show the user resting their palm on the screen while inking.
