will this be able to run windows OS as well?
He said that todays netbooks can't play 720p video..my Eee PC 900HA does, no sweat...the guy is a turkey!
Huh, my 1000H can play 1080p with little lags on high dynamic scenes with CoreAVC codec (with deblocking turned off). The interesting thing is what kind of stuff except CPU they want to put in this 200$ netbook.
that's a really nice netbook and the price is awesome. i figure that for them to sell at $199, it will come w/ Linux and 4g of internal storage with room to upgrade. so far i like what i see. iam in Dallas, TX so i post here if i hear anything.
Lithium Ion Battery is a mistake (Lithium Ion has typically only 500 charges per life-time of the battery, where if they used the same LiFePO4 battery as the OLPC XO-1 then the battery would have a 2000 charges per lifetime (and cost less than Lithium Ion). Time will tell if the unit will do what they say it will... running only Linux it needs to be fast and maybe they should have put the Pixel Qi screens in it to increase the battery time even more (then with that long battery life feature, they would sell like hot cakes).
If they had enough RAM to run WINE (if wine would run on their ARM processor) then many Windows apps and games would run on their Linux... of course testing will only see if this is possible at all!
Sod getting the OS sorted. Smack Crunchbang on that thing.
Guys, this is not a x86 processor:
(1) No it won't run Windows. Windows is binary-only and the binaries of Windows only run on x86 processors.
(2) No WINE won't help running Windows apps and games either, because Wine Is Not an Emulator, it is a front-end for Windows libraries -- the binaries are still x86 code which still must be ran by an x86 processor. However, running a real emulator like QEMU should be possible but the performance shall be very bad compared to Linux apps compiled to run natively.
(3) Which does not mean that using something else than a x86 processor is a bad idea. Just don't look at it if what you want is Windows or Windows apps.
how the hell are you guys running 720p or 1080p video on a 900HA or 1000H? The panel resolution is only 1024x600.
That thing looks gorgeous
Definatly a possibility for me at that price
I did notice that on the close-up of the keyboard, there are two "windows" type looking keys, like the home key on eee.
there is an hd accelerator that he said!
@7:56: how running 720p: external monitor.
Best Buy in the United States is now selling the Eee PC 900A for $199.99.
Why wait for this? The Atom processor in it rocks and for the price it's a steal!
The problem is that Best Buy only sells in the US :-) otherwise I would buy this 900A straight away and put some real SSD inside.
Note that this Best Buy 900A is with a 4GB pain-slow SSD, which can be a deal breaker... Unless you plan on upgrading the SSD, in which case it's the perfect device. But then, the device cost more than $199.99 if you add the price of the SSD upgrade ;-)
Atom can't do 720p??!

The Dell Mini 12 (a Menlow-based netbook) was perfectly decoding a 1080p H.264 Blu-ray rip (20 - 35Mbps) while running through a Quake III timedemo.
Freescale.. FAIL!
The hinge area between the screen and body is hideous looking
Yahoo!
Atom is going to DIE!
@Anonymous 5:11 PM:
FFS. The Dell Mini 12 is using hardware acceleration from the video chipset to decode 1080p h264. The Atom is doing nothing.
ahh why would you even want windows on something like this, it's a bloated peice of slow crap.... LINUX ROCKS
Windows is a security blanket that the masses have been duped into thinking they can't do with out.
Linux is not familiar or user-friendly or 'intuitive' remember, and you probably have to navigate a command-line-interface just to perform the most rudimentary of tasks (or so we've been spoon fed anyway).
ARM netbooks are going to revolutionise the mobile digital experience, and unless you wanna regress back to Windows CE, then start looking at just how user-friendly and intuitive Linux can be.
For Web, IM, Office, Media tasks, Linux is ideal, and the safest, easiest choice for these tiny little devices. Windows simply can't cut it, but insecure users need to realise they gotta cut Windows.. loose.
Lack of windows/intel is the sweetness of this thing.
