I needed to cut 3mm of plastic away here.
and about 3 mm slice from this thin plastic wall.
This is ZadaCOM 3G+ HSDPA modem opened.
After desoldering connectors away I soldered these wires as shown here.
SIM card slot... All working... Surf is up!
Questions? Comments?
This mod works on any eee pc without the extra pcie slot. ( so it's not good for 8G models ( pcie slot has that 8g ssd drive ) and not as easy on first 4g models with pcie connector in place ( you would need to cut 20 mm of from the pcb to make it fit) )

hi jkk,
what is asus saying about your hardware-tweeks? (touchScreen in the eee & the HSDPA-module) they must be watching with great interest...
any reactions from asus?
greets THEDUKE.
did you lose a USB port with this addition?
no, i didn't lose usb port, as i took the signals from mainboard pcie pins.
you can see it in this picture: http://bp1.blogger.com/_ZKlSQm2j7TI/R3Qkzj6RHmI/AAAAAAAABjg/qnm45JgY05M/s1600-h/IMG_0701.JPG
Hwere are the USB signals for the touchscreen going?
I'm using webcams usb signals for the touch... i don't need that cam..
I just wanted to let you know that i think you are doing some great mods! They seem to be just a bit over my head (i've got it all down but the soldering) but I love to continue reading about you pushing the eee to its full potential.
Excellent job! 2 quick questions:
1. Where are the antenna wires?
2. What is the clear plastic that you used to cover the HSDPA module inside the notebook? (I assume that is to shield it)
1. Where are the antenna wires?
-you can see that white and black wires on the pix .. and that white wire on last pix from the botton
2. What is the clear plastic that you used
-it just good plastic tape for chielding. you can get that from electronics stors
What can i say...
Like always JKK, great job!
Cheers,
Sascha

Hi,
It's great, but how long the battery after all these changes on your eee ?
Thanks for yor blog ;-)
@+
That Eee PC is looking better by the day.
I guess you could start a business just selling modded Eee's :)
Now, all you need is a GPS inside and it will be a all-in-one perfect UMPC :)
what an amazing eee hack! i'll definitely try this once i receive my eee! (mid-january, according to nutrius.de)
Just a small pet peeve - in the speed test it's megabits and kilobits, not megabytes and kilobytes per second. :) Great work, keep it up!
Are you selling any units with the 3G mod already in place?
Could you do a TinyXP install on the eeepc for us and see how it fares? I think it should fly on that thing! :D
I wanted to know JKK Have you ever tried to install a HSDPA in to a Q1U to see if the Sim card slot worked. i went to bestbuys yesterday and feel in love. I'm trying to wait tell after CES to buy a UMPC. I saw your Right up on the Advantage and went and got one but its just not enought for me i need more so if you can Please test
Frikkin-A! You got a FrankenEee going there! What's next?
I know the easiest way to use an antenna would be to use the built in wifi (2400mhz) antenna, BUT it's for the wrong frequency range. Wireless broadband cards operate in the 800, 900, 1800, 1900 and 2100mhz bands. With my limited knowledge of amateur radio and antenna building skills, it tells me that your wifi antenna is too short and could cause problems now and in the future such as reduced transmit and receive signal strength and burning up the output transistors on the card because of too high vswr on the antenna (reflected power back to the transmitter from the antenna because it's not made for that frequency range). I am not saying I know better than you, I'm just saying that you could get better transmit/receive power if you used the proper antenna.
An idea could be that you could use the antenna that came with the usb device and just desolder it from the board and remove (carefully) the plastic cover on it so the wire(s) are left. Get a pigtail antenna connector from something broken or not used for the mini pcie card and solder it to the antenna the card came with and put it in an empty area of the eee or put it inside the display lid where one of the old wifi antennas was. Your 3g card would last longer, produce less heat, and "get out" much better than a "random" length of wire.
Nice hack JKK... You beat me to it!
I was going to publish a very similar mod using a Sierra Wireless 875U HSDPA modem. Unfortunately, lack of time kept me from doing this in time for the holidays :)
Hi tnkgrl!
Please publish your mod soon!
I know people want to see it as 875U is easier to find in many places.
Are you using the usb board too or just the module?
JKK, you are doing the best mods for the eeepc i've seen on the whole web, and i've been looking a lot!
Sorry Dumb question, but where can you purchase these on the internet? I'm from the US! Thanks jkk fantastic job again! My touch panel is on the way!
mongoose8p:
U should maybe wait for tnkgrl to publish this mod using Sierra Wireless 875U HSDPA modem...
..those are easier available.
I don't know any place selling this Zadaco in US..
JKK, my mod will use the SW 875U UBS board (for the existing SIM holder), but it will fit any Eee (other the the 8G since the space is used by the SSD)- it will probably use a screen mounted penta-band antenna.
Try other mini PCI-e instead of SIERRA and see what will happen...;)
OK I'm convinced! I'm going to buy an EEE PC, and try this mod for myself :o)
JKK, I'm in England, and "3 Mobile" offers a 3G USB device, which appears to be the Huawei E220 USB Modem.
http://threestore.three.co.uk/payg/?modem=1
Do you have any idea if it will fit in the same space in the EEE PC?

Sorry, seems the last link was incomplete.
I believe this is the same HSDPA modem offered by Asus for the EEE.

hi,
i noticed the eee-pc was running windows...i thought it only comes with linux....do you have the drivers for linux.
regards
mike
yep, there are drivers for linux too..
Hello JKK:
Some cool stuff you have going with your eepc - Some Questions -
1. Do you have a full copy of windows or a modified version?
2. If you have a full version, how much of your hard drive does it take up?
Thanks
1. yes, full xp pro
2. it takes about 2.1 GB
Ok, Thanks - I Take It Your Have The 4gig Version?
Thanks
yep, 4G
Thanks Again - Could You Please Varify If The Following Would Work In Conjunction With The EEPC?

sorry, but there is no way i could confirm that it's ok..
.. panel needs to be about 165 mm x105 mm x 1 mm to fit but i didn't find that info there...
Thanks for looking anyway - I think ill just leave mine as it is for the moment.
I am definetly going to keep the Linux OS that came with it on there.
I was thinking of booting windows off a SD card, Memory Stick or An External HDD - Do you have any suggestions on how i can do this?
Thanks
hi, jkk,
from the photos, it seemed that the HSDPA Module you used(ZadaCOM 3G+) includes a Mini PCIe module and a USB conversion board, why not use the Mini PCIe module directly? Do the soldering work to use USB interface is more difficult, isn't it?
to: Fromjw
when you use the mini-PCIe connector, the Eee disables the internal Flash. It seems that Asus intended for the mini PCIe to be used only as a SSD expansion socket for the 8GB model.
Thats why we can only use the USB connections present in there.
Where did you get your 3G simcard? How much did you buy it for? Did you have to sign a contract with a cellphone company to get one?
Hi, great mod. I've got a tablet with an empty pcmcia card slot. there's a usb port just beside it. Do you think i can do the same and throw the hsdpa pcb into the pcmcia slot?
any dis-advantage over getting a pcmcia card? I've one sonyericsson 300 pcmcia card but it sticks out about 1cm from the tablet which is what i don't want. was thinking of making the hsdpa modem internl.... possible? pls share your views and advise.
Thanks!
Huawei E220 USB Modem - would like to know if it would fit also :)
And i have white surf 4g - it has no expansion door on bottom - is it possible to fit something there?

do you have to be a subscriber to the phone server in order to get the web right? so...youd have to pay for it monthly like a normal service? or is it free?
es, i have to have a SIM card to make it work.
Cost depends on the deal you want...
Here, in Finland, I can get unlimited service for 10E/month
Moi jkk,
Which provider / offer do you use for 3G ?
t, Jerome
one of my friend told me he can watch local tv channel is that correct ?
Nice
Jucarii Copii
Hi Jkk,
your mods was absolutely perfect. Fantastic!! Can't wait to try it to my own eee pc. Thx!
Guys is this available or compatible in the USA?
hi jkk,
can i add a mini pci-e modem in new asus eee pc900??
Option GTM380 or GTM382
Sierra Wireless MC8785V or MC8780
are compatibles?
Many Thanks
Francesco
Francesco,
I'm sorry but they would not work on it..
I just tested today, and if you insert any other device than SSD to second pcie slot, it disables the first SSD too..
Not even the first pcie slot work ( the wifi ) with 3g modules.....
Hi Jkk
Very nice mod. I bought Zadako 3G+ usb modem, but the board is different from your photos. No battery, slightly different layout and sierra MC8780 instead MC8775. My problem is I am not able to find + and _ on my board (because there is no battery). Any suggestion ?
Greetings jkk!
Which Zadako modem did you use exactly? There are three different types to buy on their website: ZadaCOM 3G+ 1.8; ZadaCOM 3G+ 7.2; ZadaCOM 3G+ HSUPA
Please clarify. Thanks a lot. By the way, great mod!
Hugo
I used ZadaCOM 3G+ 7.2
I watched video where you were attaching touch screen and it was brilliant but i was thinking abou tthat fingerprint reader. If you disabled the webcam, why dont you put it out and install the fingerprint reader there instead of it?
to stay on topic:
where did you get to know where to connect the usb cables?
Josch, like allways, the base for a good mod is testing alot...
I tested several other methods and find this one the best.
Jkk Fantastic mod!...Again! I curious to find out could you have left the battery in and used it as the power source for the modem allowing you to save battery life for the rest of th pc?
If that mod can be done why not a mod for a second battery or extended battery? power seems to be the future problem with any other mods

is it possible to fit a dvd-writer in a eee pc 900? and how do u do it?
nope
JKK, have you tried to put the modem board directly into the mini pcie slot? I have the connector available just near the RAM and I can acces it from the ram bay (cover). If it diables the ssd why not try to cut te connections on the modem board leaving just the power and usb D+ and D-.
Do you think that will work? cause I might just do that. I have a 900 version 20Gb = 4Gb (on main ssd) + 16Gb on removable ssd. I would prefer to have 3g internet rather than 16 Gb cause I plan to mod in some extra flash
so is there a way i can make my eeepc function as a phone?
great guide!
thank you
nice mod..have to try it.. :)
standard virus removal procedure for Eee pc
http://haktech.blogspot.com
hey, I was wondering if you have the driver for the card, I been trying to find it but so far everything I have installed on my dell m65 does not work
Thanks
does the 3g usb device utilize the wireless antennea the same way as it would soldered inside? does the connectivity make a difference being in the usb or inside the pc?
In the photos, I see you have the same 'early' version of Asus EeePC 701 model that I have, and I see you have removed the wifi module from its mini-PCIe slot as well. My question is why did you not make use of that slot, rather than using the SSD expansion slot instead? I don't understand this, as the wifi slot doesn't interfere with the boot and already has the correct power available - with BIOS control, even! The only thing that slot is lacking are the 4 USB connections to interface to the Sierra module. So, wouldn't it be better to mount the Sierra module in the wifi slot and run only the USB port wiring to it instead?
wifi slot has usb too.. but if you pu anything else than the original wifi there it wount power up.. it is bios locked.
I thought it was the other way around. I did try putting the Sierra module (MC5725, taken from an AC595U) in there, and it did seem to power up but I couldn't get a connection going so I thought it was due to the lack of USB connections to that slot. Is it not that the Sierra module is USB-only, but the original wifi is PCIe bus connection instead?
What is the pinout for MC5725? I have searched for a long time on the internet and have even called Sierra directly, but still I cannot find such. Do you know of any place to find the real technical datasheet for it?
Was there no internal PCI-e cards available that you had to take out and use the parts of the external modem!!!
Otherwise
GREAT JOB!
REALLY SMART!
great job. unbelievable... nice! i appreciate people like this one.
Will this work in the epc 1000he?
Please let me know!
Hello JKK , as many times had been said in here u are really doing some amazing mods mods, Great Job, keep on rolling.
my question is, can this mod be done to Asus eee PC Model: 1005PEB-RBLK01S
if yes could you specify which modem will be suitable for this modification on this netbook,
thank you in advance,
Ace
Hey,
i've followed exactly the guidance...but it doesn't work for me! I'm using a tool which is shows the connection stability and it says zero.
My netbook works great after the modifing...
What can be the problem?

Hello,
I have eee PC 1005P with 3G modem. Currently this modem is probably turned off. I didn't find in the user's manual how to turn it on.
Can you please help me with that?
Thanks
