UMPCs in education
Samsung is going strong on education markets. Few weeks ago I told you about Isley High School giving over 200 Q1Bs to students, but that was just the tip of the iceberg..

[ Samsung asked me to remove their slides ]
[ Those slides showed that they have great opportunities ]
Samsung looks like selling tens of thousands UMPCs to schools! And this is just in UK.

Samsung will not be alone there. Asus has entered to the markets with Eee PC and very attractive pricing. And others will follow...
So will UMPC success in education? I belive so. It's looking good so far.
If you need additional info about UMPCs in education, there is a wiki site you should visit.

Asus R2E soon available, includes HSDPA with voice support
Asus have been busy updating R2E support site. One of the updates show the HSDPA modem model as Sierra Wireless MC8775V, which has voice support.
I don't think UMPCs need voice support, but as a free option it's ok..
R2E has Intel's new A110 cpu running at 800Mhz, which should give better battery life. We will see that then...
This new model should be available soon.

WebGuide, Media Center extender on UMPC
WebGuide is one of my favorite software. I'm actually using it more than the Media Center itself. In this video I'm showing some of it's features, on UMPC of course.

Asus Eee PC 701, Laptop Magazine's review
"Asus is forging a new class of device with the Eee PC. Yes, you can get a laptop with a bigger screen and better specs for the same amount of money, but this machine wasn't designed to go toe-to-toe with bargain-basement Windows laptops..
"It's an excellent secondary computer for households with children, and it's a very good primary computer for novice PC users who never had the time or patience to master an operating system."
"We found the small seven-inch, 800 x 480-pixel display pretty easy on the eyes, especially when compared with Ultra-Mobile PCs like the OQO model 02 (5 inches) and FlipStart 1.0 (5.6 inches)"
"We'd also like to see Asus make the Eee PC mobile-broadband friendly--so you can surf beyond hotspot range--either by adding Bluetooth support (using a 3G cell phone as a modem) or by adding support for USB-powered modems."
Asus is actually prepping their accessories.
They clearly "got it".

More companion devices?
Palm foleo died...but some are missing it. Now i-Mate is rumored to make their own version, compatible with their phones. Hmm.. there is actually pretty simple way to make a "universal" device like that..
This is iPod video dock. It has bigger screen, video input and battery. Sells at $175.
Take that iPod away, add keyboard with bluetooth, and it could be used with any smart phone with bt and video out... for about $200.
But would we want/need one? If yes, what would be the optimal size?
10 inch screen like in Foleo? UMPC like 7 incher or should it be pocketable?
And should it have VGA in for small UMPCs like OQO and Everun?
Steve has been thinking something similar too... He just don't have the same 3d cad software I'm using..

Sandisk 32 Gb SSD on Fujitsu U810 UMPC
More and more SSD drives are coming to markets so prices and availability is getting better. You should still be careful as some drives are too big for some UMPCs.
Here is Fujitsu U810, back panel open, old Toshiba drive still in.
As you can see, Sandisk SSD drive is higher than the original.
So you need to remove the metal casing to make it fit..
Casing removed..
..and use some tape to keep it steady.
Working!
..and it's fast!

Sunday evening and umpc?
Formula1, final race for the season... Best race ever... Live timing from umpc while watching... And the winner for the race and championship is Kimi Räikkönen from Finland !!
UPDATE: Looks like I wasn't the only one using online F1 services. Finnish internet traffic hit it's alltime record at the time of the race, being 33% more. Streaming sport events and live data seems to attract more and more people.
